Why doesn’t the local water supply system improve the quality of tap water, using the same method as BRITA®?

The quality of water produced by public water supply systems is generally good, but sometimes problems arise between the time it leaves the plant and the time it reaches your home water system.  So even if it is produced and filtered in the same way as with BRITA^®, it may not reach your faucet in ideal condition due to long-term use of municipal or household plumbing, not cleaned regularly.  It is also important to realize that while a person's daily water use is between 428 and 719 liters, only a small fraction is used for drinking water or for food processing. It wouldn't be economical to filter the whole water volume in this way. It is better to do this last step in your own home, at point of use with a BRITA® filter.
